The Money Pit Series: our drab entryway

It was looking pretty dark and stormy. Admit it. Ok, I admit. Our entryway...well, it just kinda sucked. Or I could lie and say we were really trying to run with the Halloween theme there for awhile...

Just missing something, right? I agree. I began to hate that mission table that we used in our old condo which clearly did not go with our garden stool and pretty gray walls. It was a real head scratcher for me.

My rules for rocking a pencil skirt.

I like to think of myself as a pencil skirt aficionado. In fact, it's the most worn item in my closet. Yes, over jeans.

I've learned that not all pencil skirts are created equal either. The fit is key. It has to hug in the right places without being too tight thus showcasing your flaws. You mommas might be able to relate to this topic as I struggle with it daily!

I love pencil skirts for their femininity and because it takes zero brain effort to complete an outfit. It really is the outfit!

My favorite two pencil skirts are this one in wool and this one. I have my eye on this one and I am dying to get my hands on this mint skirt for Spring. Truly, I've had the best luck with the J.Crew versions which are a bit pricier but worth the investment because they hold up amazingly well.

Onto the good stuff...what's the best way to rock a pencil skirt? Here are my rules:
  1. Contrasting brights will always look sharp together. Think of Starburst colors!
  2. Monochromatic is surprisingly easy as well. Choose one hue and throw it all together with a hot statement necklace.
  3. Watch your silhouette. It's perfectly acceptable to wear a chunkier knit or loose blouse tucked into your skirt. Skin tight tops = not on trend. The key is to offset the fitted look of the skirt and balance it with a looser top.
  4. Generally speaking, a fitted pencil skirt is sexy and professional. No need for plunging necklines.
  5. Opt for a midi pencil skirt that hits below the knees. With pumps, even the most vertically challenged women (me!) will appear leaner and taller!
  6. If you're going to invest...opt for one colorful skirt and a classic color like black. You can't go wrong!
P.S. Don't forget a cute clutch. Consider this your finishing piece!

Beauty 411: March Beauty Box Five

Last month's Beauty Box Five was all about yummy scents. From handmade soapy goodness to coconut-y scrumptious body butter; I can now blame yet another Beauty Box for adding to my long list of beauty obsessions. You can thank me, too...keep reading!
  1. Swissco Dual-sided Facial Pad: Just what my skin needed during the change of season. This is the perfect exfoliation tool but not nearly as harsh as you would expect. Gently massage in small circles and your skin will feel as smooth as a baby's tush!
  2. H2O Plus Spa Targeted Care Hand and Nail Cream: Talk about the ultimate moisturizer for your precious hands. I am maniacal about washing my hands throughout the day and I could still feel the moisture sealed in. Gotta love that! And forget the greasy residue...you won't encounter that with this hand cream.
  3. BellaPierre Cosmetics Makeup Base: This is a multi-tasker, in other words, do yourself a favor and add it to your makeup bag pronto! It doubles as an illuminator, concealer and eyeshadow primer. Are you excited because I was?! This base has a lightweight, creamy texture that truly hides every imperfection without taking a ton of real estate in my cosmetic bag.
  4. Jane's Pick All Natural Soaps - Kind: All natural and no chemicals. Words were never sweeter when it comes to my beauty products. Each soap is infused with herbs and flowers and really...they just smell pretty darn good. I display mine in our guest bathroom.
  5. Tree Hut Shea Coconut Lime Body Butter: I love the consistency of this body butter. And the scent is so fantastic that I can ultimately skip perfume all together. It gets me really excited for summer. What part of coconut lime doesn't, right? P.S. My husband said I smell good when I wear it so there's that. BONUS!
Next up, April which is all about beauty-on-the-go! Be sure to follow Beauty Box Five on Facebook and Twitter, too.

With every new season is the opportunity to freshen up my accessories. Of course, being the shopping expert that I am; you can be assured that I take this job very seriously. In other words, this working mom is never asleep at the wheel when it comes to a good pair of shoes or even better, an amazing clutch! And this is why, my friends...I still work.

March's Little Luxuries

I always remembered March being a particularly long month. It didn't feel that way this year. Sorta came and went. Still, I deliberately stopped to smell the roses. Here are some of the things that made the list last month!
  1. Fresh tulips.
  2. Shredded chicken hand rolls at Whole Foods.
  3. Sauvignon Blanc. It's warming up again!
  4. L'Oreal Infallible lipstick in "Unending Kiss." Finally a nude hue that suits my skin.
  5. Elizabeth Mott "It's so Big" volumizing mascara.
  6. Buying Easter candy and eating it early.
  7. I was eyeing the "Matricia" sandal for awhile and finally pulled the trigger. For the love of Lucite.
  8. The sun. On my face, on my arm while I'm driving...I'll take any and all of it.
  9. The comeback of canvas slip-ons. Leopard ones to be exact like these.
  10. Spray tans because it's time to look a different shade of pale.
  11. At-home pedicures with my Emjoi Micro-Pedi. Hello summer feet!

Crimson.

photography by Cleodine Photography

I saw this top and I knew I had to have it. I'm already picturing it with frayed cut offs in the summer. I wore it as recently as Friday for a date night. Comfort is key after a long week. And last week was a long week. (read: my husband had the stomach flu = solo mom)

#BloggerBrunch

By far and away, my favorite part about blogging is the people I've met along the way. I cannot think of a singular, adult hobby where I would have the opportunity to be continuously inspired by new friends and so many driven women. In many ways, I feel very fortunate. I have a virtual and real life support system of women who will cheer lead my triumphs and match that same glass of wine on the tribulations.

On Sunday, I was introduced to a most excellent hostess - Miss Mary of Sportsanista. Observe the level of detail that was put into this intimate brunch. She now reigns as the "Pinterest Brunch Queen". I think you can see why. {and yes, they were delicious}
