Creature comforts: tomato soup, down blankets, hot cocoa...a great concealer. Yup, I said it. A great concealer has now become a daily necessity for me and while mass drugstore brands have always worked just fine, I've stepped it up a notch and it was so so worth it!

Behold - Confessions of a Concealaholic by Benefit! I started eyeing this perfect little palette in March. Now July...I finally took the plunge this week. For $36, you will find a solution for every possible situation you encounter. Dark eyes, no prob - try the erase paste. Need a primer for the eyelids - give the lemonade a whirl. How about some industrial strength concealer for those long nights {OLIVIA!} - enter boi-ing! You get the gist and if you were to buy all these products a la carte, the cost would retail somewhere around $112 so for a kit retailing at $36; I consider this extremely economic! {it even comes with a "how-to" manual on how to maximize each product in the kit}

Also, because I am a retail gal's dream have to try the POREfessional. I must wear a sign on my forehead that reads, "I love beauty and smart packaging." Whilst visiting the Benefit store on Armitage, the sales gal applied this on the sides of my nose, chin and forehead. It's basically a lightweight balm that works on any skin color or tone that makes even the largest of pores disappear. I kid you not. I have pores the size of Arkansas so this product had its work cut out. It absorbs into the skin immediately and you can apply it over or under your makeup. Brilliant.

And finally - a new and uber talented blogger friend, Danielle of Breakfast at Toast, made a visit yesterday to photograph Olivia. Let's just say this woman has some mad skills. She's the baby whisperer. And extraordinarily patient because Olivia was new to the photo shoot concept. Her antics included but are not limited to peeing on my velvet chair {twice}, crying mid-sess and requiring fuzzy blankets for warming breaks. Ahhh...the good life!

I first heard about planking from Ashleigh. {I know, a little late to the party} She shared this link. And it got us thinking...Olivia has really exhibited some strength in the last few days. Exhibit A above. We call this the "Olivia plank".

Disclaimer: we realize we need to get out more. we are very aware.

A birthday of firsts!

That's my Pops - today is his birthday and it was a morning of firsts for both he and Olivia. This was Dad's first stroller push. And Olivia's first brunch venture with the fam. It was a great morning filled with cheesy omelets, travel gifts for my parent's trip to Greece, sunshiny walks and endless cups of coffee. Might I add, if you live in Chicago...Dunlays has fantastic breakfast. I mean fantastic!

Happy Birthday Dad/Grandpa! We love you!!

Smile Friday

Surprise! I got home on Wednesday and as you can mom has already started humiliating me by pulling pants over my belly button. I'm still a peanut and weigh a whopping 5 lbs, 11 oz. Most clothes are REAL big on me. Don't matter though...I just make a mess of every outfit which requires about 3 changes a day. Ha ha...suckers!

Have a great weekend my and the parental units are hitting up Babies R' Us and celebrating Grandpa P's birthday. Yahooo...later NICU!

Guest blogger: Lara of The Glossarie

Hi there! My name is Lara and I curate a little beauty and accessory obsessed wonderland called The Glossarie. I’m a huge fan of 101 Things and so thrilled to be guest posting for Johanna who is hopefully snuggling up to miss Olivia – is she not the cutest?!

I thought that my take on a mom-friendly five minute face would be the perfect way to chat up a few of my favorite products while also giving Johanna some simple ways to stay pretty while tending to little Livie, so here goes:

Tinted Moisturizer

This stuff is a summertime secret weapon! Just a pea-sized amount (or less depending on your coverage needs) applied with a stippling brush is a quick and easy way to a flawless finish. My favorite brand is Laura Mercier Oil Free but if you’re looking for a budget friendly option, I recently tested Wet N Wild’s $4 version and was very impressed.

Under Eye Brightener

Smashbox has created Photo Op Under Eye Brightener for those of us who don’t get as much sleep as we require. I’ve tested about a billion under eye brighteners and this one is the best around. I do three little dots under each eye and blend with my ring finger for absolutely invisible dark circles – a must have for sleep deprived mommies.

Lip Stain

Let’s just say that the combination of sticky lip gloss and adorable smooch-worthy babies is a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, lip stains have come a long way and deliver the longest-lasting absolutely budge-proof color. I love the Josie Maran Magic Marker. It glides on and you can layer any lip balm on top to prevent drying. Now Johanna can give Olivia endless kisses without worrying about leaving any lip color behind!

Hair Cream

When trying to sneak a shower during naptime, it’s so much easier to skip the heat styling. I’ve wanted to feature this Fresh Sake Hair Cream on the blog for awhile now because I think it’s so amazing. If you scrunch it in after towel drying your hair and then leave it (no brushing or blow drying), it somehow works with what your hair naturally does and just amplifies it – frizz free. A total miracle product!

Then, just brush on your favorite blush or bronzer, swipe on a bit of mascara if you so desire and you are one hot momma!

We salute you, Pops!

Dad...the first man I fell in love with. The man that all women compare their boyfriend, husband, significant other, too. The man that roots you on at soccer games, speech contests and ballet recitals. The man you call to talk shop. The man you called crying when he broke your heart. The man your first daughter will happily call "grandpa"! My dad...he wears a lot of different hats and holds a lot of different titles and that's what makes him my dad. He set the benchmark. What can I say? I love my dad...Happy Father's Day, Pops - I love you.

And to the new Dad in my life...Happy Father's Day to you, my dear. Lucky for me and more importantly, for Olivia - you are a version of my dad and that's why I love you. They say women pick men that think and act similar to their father. Well, it's true! See what you have to look forward to!!

Ponytail Friday

I like me a good ponytail. Messy, sleek, whispy, teased -- it's all good to me.
And that's just what this Friday calls for; a ponytail and a fist pump for the weekend. Don't you think?

What's on your agenda, lovelies? I hope it's a weekend to remember! xo

A sweet, sweet garden

Remember these peonies? They came from my mother-in-law's garden "bunny trail". Because of this year's weather, it just hit full bloom. How awesome is this? Those are all peonies on the left. The scent is kinda unreal. It's the best perfume you could ever imagine!

And the finished product...

Mom + Dad P started a new section of their garden, too. It's aptly called "Olivia's Garden". I  haven't made it out there yet but I am excited to see their blooms, too!

Guest blogger: Jenny of Jenny in Ohio

Hi all, Jenny here from Jenny in Ohio. I am here today to guest post for Johanna while she's with her bebe. Congrats Johanna and welcome to the world, Olivia!

I got a food processor last Christmas, and was super pumped to make hummus. It's so yummy with veggies and chips!

However, the price of tahini, a small but vital ingredient, was a huge turn-off for me, so I put it off. Have you ever priced tahini? $7 for a can? I am too much of a cheapskate for that!

So instead, I came up with this.

It's Guacamole Hummus, and it's yummy! It combines two of my favorite things- avocado and chickpeas.

Here's the recipe:
I halved everything, because my food processor is small, but it will easily double.

  • 1/2 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 clove garlic
  • handful fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • salt & pepper to taste

Process the first four ingredients. Add olive oil, water and lemon juice until smooth. You made need to add more than listed to make smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with tortilla chips or vegetables.

Guest blogger: Ashleigh of Little Girl, Big World

Hello there! It's Ashleigh from Little Girl, Big World. I'm honored to be guest posting here while Johanna breaks for some quality bébé time. Johanna was one of the first (and few) bloggers I've met in real life. She's a real sweetheart and it's been a pleasure keeping up with her lovely posts and most recent joyous occasion, the arrival of baby Olivia. {Congrats Johanna and family, welcome to the world 'Lil 'Liv!} Since summer is finally in full swing here in Chicago I though I'd share some summer beauty faves and a few new finds.

Stay cool kids!

1. Cha Cha Tint - We've adored Benetint and Posietint - what's not to love about the lastest lip/cheek stain, a peachy/mango hue that perfect for sunkissed skin.

2. Turquoise Eyeliner - A little shimmery blue liner on the lower inner rim of the eye adds a mermaid like effect to summer neutrals.

3. Summerhair - Beach Waves  - This stuff gives your hair a wavy texture you never knew possible. Seriously. Spritz and diffuse... Who's that Beach Goddess??

4. Turquoise Nail Polish - same effect as number 2 for your fingers!

5. Bronze Goddess - Because the only thing better than actual summer, is the smell of summer. (A mid-January whiff of this will change your winter outlook. Swear.)

See you around!

OOOTD: Olivia's Outfit of the Day

It's only fair that Olivia show her gratitude for some of the couture gifts she's received this month. And as a budding fashionista, there's nothing that pleases me more than being able to dress a little girl. Way more fun than figuring out your own outfit of the day!

The deets:
  • Leopard onesie - Itty Bitty Baby
  • Bow hat - courtesy Hospital
  • Patterened blanket - Dwell Studio for Target
The occasion: feeding & nap time!

P.S. Olivia now weighs 5 lbs!

Rainy Friday

Well...this is a fine how do you do, isn't it? First we have 100 degree temps and then a 40 degree drop with rain? Weather gods - you confuse me. I had so many outdoor activities planned for the weekend.

I think my mood corresponds with the weather. I feel rather...listless. I'd like to sneak Olivia out and curl with the fam under the covers and watch movies...order pizza in. BUT, we cannot do that just yet. Speaking of gods - NICU gods...are ya listening? All right already! We're ready for her to come home. Just sayin'.

Here's a quote/illustration that always makes me laugh when I'm feeling bummy. Have a good Friday, people. We all deserve it!

Litany of Love

  1. Shameless plug...don't ya want to be greener?
  2. Bensimon sneakers - so Parisian chic.
  3. Flirty, crepe-y chiffon magic.

  5. Are pointy stilettos back in because I'm seeing a lot of them?!
  6. I love each room for different reasons...good choices, A!
  7. A lovely post about bees.
  8. So I think I just added Italy to my travel list.
  9. Colorful foot stools for your bedroom!
  10. Neon clutches - bring it!
  11. I need a LBD for an event - thoughts?
  12. Livie needs this outfit. Heck, I would wear it!

Strike a pose!

I like to call this shot Olivia's "paparazzi" pose. Notice the hand. Talk to it. That's what she's sayin.

I like to call this shot Olivia's "hear no evil" pose. Hands to the ears...not listening. Why do I picture her doing this at the tender age of 2 as I tell her no snacks before dinner?

In all seriousness though, I literally thought their faces would melt off the first time they held her. It was hilarious and endearing all at the same time.

Guest blogger: Kate of DomestiKatedLife

Hello everyone! This is Kate from DomestiKatedLife, guest posting while new Mommy Johanna is enjoying some well deserved time off!

When a friend has a baby you make a home cooked meal or some delicious baked goods and bring them over so the new mom doesn't have to worry about cooking, right? Well, since Johanna has become one of my wonderful blog friends and I can't bring over a tray brownies, I thought I would send her a little home cooking love on the blog and round up some delicious recipes for her readers instead.

There seems to be a trend happening where bakers are taking something delicious -- like a cookie or cupcake -- and stuffing it with something even more delicious -- like an Oreo -- to make something out of this world. Let's start with the basics: Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies; a classic, inside of a classic.

Another staple, but for the chocolate obsessed: Brownies with Oreos baked inside -- and just because it wasn't enough, the recipe calls for them to be served with cookies and cream ice cream!

Some say that cupcakes are over-played, but I say, cupcakes never go out of style. Especially with a new spin on them, like these cookies and cream cupcakes with Oreo bits in the batter.

And finally, the most indulgent for last! (Yes, we're getting MORE indulgent). Cookies and cream Oreo stuffed rice krispy treats. I'm overwhelmed with joy just typing those words. YUM.

Go check these recipes out, and if you live nearby, be sure to drop some off for Johanna!

Congrats, Johanna, and thanks for having me!
