Wow. What a year! Here's what I learned...remember last year's?
{in no apparent order and still based on my opinion only}
  1. I am an intense person. As in...I feel intensely about the people and things I love and conversely the opposite.
  2. I think saving money kinda sucks.
  3. I know by the time I write this that I will be ready for another vacation. I miss travel but I LOVE baby girl.
  4. Moving to the suburbs does not frighten me anymore.
  5. My love for honey crisp apples is now tied with oranges and mangoes.
  6. Colored tights make winter a heck of a lot BRIGHTER. Why didn't I rock these before?
  7. My friends are like cats...they always land on their feet even after hard times.
  8. My parents think everything and everywhere outside our hometown is dangerous. {you know it's true!}
  9. Seeing my brother go through a bad breakup makes me sad.
  10. Seeing my brother meet a really great girl makes me happy.
  11. Seeing my brother's bare a*s makes me scared. {don't was a night of imbibing for him}
  12. Lucy now has unconditional love for someone else besides husband and, too!
  13. Strollers are heavy.
  14. Wine is divine after a 9 7-month hiatus.

  16. Having a bigger butt...not so much.
  17. I still don't want an iPhone.

  19. Frozen yogurt...yes, you are very good.
  20. I am never driving a minivan.
  21. Sometimes I wish I could meet more of my blog friends in person. I love you guys!
  22. Husband is a really good dad. But I knew that going in.
  23. Natural disasters really stink but on the flip side, they make me ever so grateful for what I have.
  24. I never ever want to be sick or hospitalized for a long period of time. But, who does?!
  25. You really don't need that much sleep to survive.
  26. Color blocking is the best trend to hit fashion, in my books.
  27. Being perfect at work and at home is tough stuff. Guess I'll have to pick one.
  28. Blogging has opened a lot of doors this year. grateful.
  29. I truly get the saying..."don't judge a book by it's cover."
  30. Baby coos are the best noise ever. and ever.
  31. Getting your period again is for the birds.
  32. I'm a people pleaser...which has its pros and cons.
  33. Thank god wide leg denim made a return. I love you GAP trousers.
  34. Forgiveness is powerful.
  35. Grudges are a waste.
  36. Dawn dish soap is the best jewelry cleaner on the cheap.
  37. Splurging on a new blog design was worth every penny.
  38. Hug the ones you love. Life is very short.
  39. I think we are ready for baby no. 2. I think.
  40. Meeting Chicago bloggers and calling them my friends IRL has been really fun. You guys make having a blog totally worth it.
Goodbye 2011. It's been swell.

Tradition, take 2.

Last year we went to the Zoo Lights with the idea that we would start a new tradition as our family grew. At the time, Olivia was the size of a lime, at best. This year, however, the Little Miss is an active baby hence we  were excited to renew the tradition once again. Unfortunately, Olivia zonked out in her stroller which left us fake coughing in hopes to wake her up. Totally normal.

Exhibit A: C'mon O!

Nothing like a photo opp with your kid...with her eyes closed.

Hey-yo! Someone woke up!

Guess what's in the travel mug? Hint: it's not coffee.

What traditions do you have with your family?

Christmas & Green Beans

This was the Christmas dress I bought in October for Olivia. You can imagine the excitement I was feeling to doll her up for our Christmas dinner. This dress lasted 15 minutes before she spit up green beans all over it; repeatedly. In fact, you can see it's a little saturated under the bow.

Note to self: Olivia does not like green beans.

Christmas faves

The "Santa Man" was good to me this year. That or I should have started this blog a lonnngggg time ago because my family has been  reading my virtual wish list. Bonus. I am sure you remember seeing a few of these items during the days leading up to Christmas. Here's a refresher: I lusted after these for years...and I am in love with pussybow blouses...I'll never complain about new accessories...and then there were these guys! I consider myself one lucky girl and let's not even get started with Olivia's toys. Her collection literally quadrupled! Good times had by all...

Glittery Friday

Happy Friday beauties! It's the kick off to a busy a weekend for us. Today I begin with cooking a giant casserole for 20, finishing last minute wrapping and getting our family all gussied up. If you are en route to see your families - travel safe. And if you're staying local - drive safe. I hope everyone gets everything on their wish list...the above would be just fine, thank you very much. Cheers! xo

Feelin' like...a skittle!

Tuesday morning I had meetings. I just stared blankly at my closet. You know that my favorite trend of 2011 was color blocking so...when in doubt....follow the trend! Fluorescent yellow cardi. Check. Turquoise blue blouse. Check. Coral lipstick {specifically "Hot Coral"}. Check.

Sometimes spontaneous outfits work a lot better than you think they will.
P.S. I did wear pants. Just simple, black skinny jeans.

Dear Santa...

I can honestly tell you that my final "Dear Santa" is completely frivolous. Meaning...a luxury item that I probably wouldn't get a lot of mileage out of but I love 'em anyways! Then again, isn't that what wish lists are all about? Can you believe Christmas is this week?

And yes, these are full on sequin pants in peony. There's something very Miss Havisham about these; perhaps that's the draw for me. Who wouldn't like a little Dries Van Noten in their closet? I'd mix it with a gray, cashmere turtleneck and a long strand of pearls. Tres chic!

What is the one huge, expensive item on your Christmas list this year? Do tell!

Inspiration: Christmas

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Oh Pinterest...where have you been all my life? Admittedly I have been feeling a tad uninspired this year. It seems like we all have so much on our plates that Christmas is coming and going and I am totally unprepared. Not normal in these parts.

But! Nobody likes a complainer so I've rounded up my favorite Pinterest images in hopes that I will begin to feel the Christmas magic. After all, I owe it to the Little Miss, regardless if she will remember it or not. We even attempted to kick things off last night by keeping our tickets to the Nutcracker. I must say, it was totally worth it. I loved every second of it. And dinner here was not to shabby either.

Are you in the Christmas spirit? What did you do to kick off the season?

P.S. Still no tree. Does anyone want to bring over a pre-decorated one and set it up for us?

Do you know someone like this?

I know I do! Target really nailed it with this year's holiday ad campaign didn't they? My favorite part is when she is looking through the catalog that she just got in the mail. Dynamite!

Taxi Friday

Hi everyone! This has been one crazy week...jetting to NYC on Wednesday and missing the two loves of my life, events, meetings and now I'm back...and it's oh-so-good to be back!

What's on your agenda this weekend? We have a wee one's 1st birthday, some end of year work wrap up and hopefully trimming the tree. Finally, right?

Merry, merry!!

I'm in a ___ state of mind...

photos courtesy Express-O
I have a great job, really, I do. And one of the greatest things about it was the travel. For a long time, I was making biweekly visits to NYC for meetings and the such. Admittedly, I got spoiled because I was technically living between two great cities.

I wouldn't trade a thing in terms of the past year and all but something's got me missing NYC hard as of late. Now I feel like I took for granted those busy-stiletto-crushing-cab-hailing-rush hour-sweating-pencil-skirt-wearing business trips when I had just enough time to sneak in a quick visit to TopShop in between meetings. Or smell roasted peanuts. Or meet my bestie for a cocktail @ the Ritz. Or nosh on a black and white cookie. Or give directions to a total stranger. Those were fun days.

There's only one cure for my Big Apple itch. Time to head back and visit my dear friend for an unexpected work trip. The timing is a smidge stressful but I welcome the opportunity to blend into the sea of suits. Wish me luck!

P.S. I am painfully aware that I am behind on my blogging...stay with me. So sorry! I'll be back 100% soon.

On the job {circa 3 weeks ago}: Olivia helping Dad with his latest spreadsheet.
This is very serious stuff.

Monday, December 12, 2011

Dear Santa...

I almost forgot about this item on my wish list and although it's totally affordable and small, it ranks really high on my list. Ever since I had Olivia, I've wanted something special with her initial to wear and this delicate, gold necklace fits the bill. Just a simple "O" would make me smile on those 3-day business trips or long meeting days when I don't get to see her smiling face 'till evening. Plus, I always love to support local artists on Etsy.

What do you guys think? Do you sport anything monogrammed?

Calming Friday

Lovelies...thank you for more kind comments and notes. We are busy but trying to recall the fabulous memories of Grandpa which is a welcome distraction and a smile to our faces.

Blogging will resume. Perhaps I will get an hour on Sunday to just get distracted and lost in the interwebs. 'Till then, no Litany of Love today but I do hope you have a marvelous weekend filled with life's simple delights. Cheers.

heavy hearts

Today we have heavy hearts. My father-in-law, husband's dad, Olivia's no longer with us.
We are sad but we know he is in a better place and his suffering has ended. In fact, if I had to guess, I would bet that he is in heaven fishing or putzing around with a new project. Those things ranked pretty high up on his list of hobbies.

Thank you for all of your positive vibes, prayers and emails. It's nice to know that we are sending him off with love and comfort. And I will share each one with husband.

Please keep husband in your thoughts during this difficult time. We are going to load up on the hugs and snuggles. Thank goodness for cherub babies and toothless grins.

P.S. I promise to respond to each comment and email hopefully by the end of the weekend. xoxo

Mommy Morsels

Like so many blogs I admire, Hank and Hunt became a quick addiction with its down-to-earth posts and awesome DIY tips. Blogger, mother and author, Jenny, is also a contributing editor for The Sweetest Occasion - watch out'll spend hours on this site, too! What I love about Hank and Hunt is that it's all about parties and finding inspiration in the everyday. Her posts are clever and always bring a smile to my face...think endless creativity and spunk. I now present...Mommy Morsels by Hank and Hunt

I am so happy Johanna invited me to share some of our favorite things over here. I have a few things that we couldn’t go a day without.
favorite things at casa H+H
  1. Tonka Truck = BEST GIFT EVER.: Classic, metal, tough. I got one for Henry at my baby shower, and then another one later from our friend.  One per kid is the best ratio, so they can chase each other around the yard. *not just for boys, girls love them too!
  2. Boogie Wipes :Crusties come off like butter.  ‘nuff said.
  3. Boys clothes from Target: 99% of our shirts come from Target.  They are thick, wash well and have the cutest designs. They also use the word AWESOME in a lot of tops, which we may or may not own all of them.
  4. Dwell Studio Color and Count Place mats: Peel off and have little ones color away waiting for lunch.  Then toss the place mat (and sticky mess) away.  Perfect.
  5. Use Crayola crayons:  Spend the extra cents and get the good crayons.  Seriously.
  6. Skippyjon Jones: Hunter’s favorite book ever.  I have to say the greatest book to read, once you get the hang of it...don’t forget a fake accent for fun!  Hunter was Skippyjon Jones for Halloween this year, but I didn’t know they already had a costume. Pleased as punch that I made a green cape, got a mask, added ears and a tail for it. Found this kit while I was grabbing links. OY! Psst. mines cuter!
  7. Schleich Toys: Best animal toys ever. My boys love these as much as legos.  Sometimes more, depending on the day. I didn’t put legos on the list, because honestly, who doesn’t love legos. These, on the other hand, are so cool I even stole some to make those cupcake toppers of mine. Yes, I had to replace them immediately.
  8. Cowboy Boots: A H+H staple since Henry was 2. Both boys have pairs and wear them more than any other pair of shoes they own.  Henry only doesn’t wear them when he wants to “run.” I’m pretty sure these are why my kids can’t tie their own shoes.
  9. *shhhhhhh....super secret weapon: I use this when I really have to do a photo shoot and NOTHING will keep them occupied. For use with emergencies only, if they get bored with this I have nothing left. Ok, besides having to learn how to shoot in artificial light after they go to sleep, boo.'re awesome! Thank you for guest blogging today. All your tips and treats make me want to have a little boy...did I just say that? Oops!

Inspiration: glam + glitz

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Today's outfit was not only inspired by this lovely abstract piece of art but the season of parties that has been bestowed upon us. I never met a soiree I didn't like and what better excuse do you need to don fuchsia suede and pearls? It seems Tibi dresses are perfect for every occasion and you'll be a hit with sparkles on the skirt and pink chiffon on top. A quick swipe of mauve lipstick and your McQueen clutch and out the door you go! Don't forget to kiss under the mistletoe!

Dear Santa...

Hats. I love 'em. I love 'em for the weekend and when I am overdue for a color. Unfortunately, my hat collection is looking a tad beat up hence I couldn't resist adding the Whistles Felt Trilby Hat to my wish list. The biggest attraction to this fedora was the color. Winter is bleak enough so I say bring on the color! And if you didn't know by now, orange and pink are my faves. In a sea of black pea coats stomping the city're sure to have a little pep in your step with this little lady!

Do you guys rock colorful hats? What's your go-to style?

P.S. Thank you for the kind notes last night. You guys are really amazing. We need all the prayers we can get for my father-in-law. Fingers crossed for some positive news this morning.

Prayer chain

If you have a prayer to spare...we'd certainly appreciate it.

Husband's father became very ill quite suddenly this weekend.

This and a massive sinus infection pushed me off the radar but I will be back tomorrow.
In the meantime, please send good thoughts his way.

I believe in the power of positive thoughts.
Thank you in advance.

Sneezy, snotty Friday

You guys...what a week! I have not had a cold this bad in ages. I've been med'ed up while trying to suck down every recommended glass of water, juice, Emergen-c and cup of tea. It ain't pretty. You know that look you get when you're sick? You're pale and glassy-eyed and even your favorite coral lipstick looks somehow weird on you? Yeah, that one...that's me. Please send prayers that baby girl and husband do not catch this. I will feel truly awful.

P.S. Did you know that olive leaf extract helps boost your immune system when you're feeling run down. Thank you Whole Foods & Erika!

Alas, a quitter I am not! Tonight is our girl's holiday dinner so I need to pull up my proverbial boot straps and dive into some french food. {sad that my taste buds/appetite are still meh but hey, nothing like the "sick" diet right after Turkey Day...hello skinny jeans. ok, that's wrong.} They say a glass of red wine is good for you, too!

What are you guys doing? Anyone heading to Renegade or Dose? I will be there...stocking stuffer time!

Litany of Love

Disclosure: My husband recently shared his opinion on this Friday series with me. He feels that it would be much more appealing if I would show the images associated with the links. Would you prefer that?

  3. Wouldn't these be lovely to receive for your tablescapes.
