Round table: Do you dress for your man or your friends {or for you}?

It's a question that's been pondered over many a glass of wine. And the answers never get old for me.

So...
Do you dress for your man or your friends?
Or even better...yourself?

My answer?
I think I do a little bit of both.

After baby{ies}, I still want to put together and have my husband think I am attractive. A little lipstick, a shower, attire that is not made of sweatshirt material, a polished ponytail - that's all you need.

On the other hand, I work at looking "cute" in front of my gal pals, too. I like to stay on trend and prove to them that I am not all "momma" or all "business" all the time. Kind of like a hybrid mullet...that's how I would describe my style.

But, I digress...and well, that's a weird comparison, Johanna.
Anyhoo...love to hear your answers. Hit me!

  1. I think we all dress for us, for other women, for men, for people we admire, for people we don't... our dress is one of my most straightforward ways of portraying something about yourself- whether it's being confident or cool or laidback or intelligent or orignal- they are all ideas about ourselves that we want to make people believe, even ourselves.

  2. I think I dress for myself and my girlfriends, to be honest. My boyfriend doesn't care at all what I wear (although he'll always tell me I look nice) and I think some of the things I wear may be too "trendy" for a guys taste.

  3. I guess I dress for myself to feel good. I want to be portrayed as I want to be to others, too. xoxo

  4. I dress for me! I like to look cute no matter where I am. My style only switches depending on where I'm going.

  6. I dress for myself first and hopefully my friends compliment me? Hahaha, I do seek girl approval from an outfit more than guy approval, but I like looking sexy every once and awhile too (I know my assets, right ;)).

Have you been to the manrepellant website? Cracks me up, bc it's so true. I read somewhere that, "If women wanted to dress for a man, they'd just walk around naked." Sigh. True.

  7. Mr. A is past the point of caring what I look like. He has seen me at my absolute worst, so anything is a step up! Haha. I dress for myself.

  8. I have to go with myself. I like what I like and don't care what other people think or if what I'm wearing is trendy. Trends don't last. Classic style does, so that's probably why I gravitate toward that - which others may consider boring.

If someone doesn't like what I have on, it doesn't affect the type of person I am or how I choose to live. Do I enjoy compliements from friends? Sure, who doesn't. It feels good to be noticed, but you still have to have confidence within.

Does my husband have a clue about fashion? Um, negative. He thinks I'm trying to dress like a 25-year old if I have on skinny jeans and boots. Like i said, no clue. But I know he likes me in dresses - or something other than yoga pants. Bah.

  9. Good question! To be honest, I usually find an 'extra-motivation' to dress better when meeting my boyfriend or other friends, for a special event...On my day-to-day life (office, groceries, errands, gym...) I settle for looking 'ok'. Anyway, no matter what the situation is, I always try to feel good about myself and dress according to the circumstances. xoxo

  10. I agree with you. I do a little of it all. I like to look and feel pretty to myself and it is important to me that my hubby thinks I look pretty too.

  11. Definitely for myself, although I guess I think differently about what I'm going to wear if I go out with friends!

  12. I agree I do a little of both. I try to look cute and attractive around my husband, and stylish and trendy around my girlfriends.

  13. I definitely dress up more for myself and girlfriends. I know my husband doesn't love me any less when I'm in sweatpants and a t-shirt, and he actually prefers me in flats rather than heels (score!) :-)

  14. Hmmmm.... I dress for myself predominately. But I do value the opinion of my husband and peers as well....
    Who doesn't?!

  15. You crack me up! I've always dressed for myself and my mom (not weird, right?), and my girlfriends all know me as the Charlotte, so there's no judgement if I'm not wearing studded mint jeans!

  18. totally a combo. i dress for all. i dress for myself, to feel good. i dress for my hubby, to feel admired. and i dress for the rest of the world, just because. especially if one appreciates good fashion... i dress for them :)

  19. Interesting topic! I always seem to dress for myself...my bf and friends sometimes roll their eyes at what I am wearing. This seems to happen most often when an outfit involves one of my fav faux fur vests. I like taking risks with outfits.

  21. what a GREAT discussion question. my short answer is that my decisions are far more geared toward other women and myself. that being said, i do value c's opinion on fashion and will take it into consideration - final decision stays with me of course ;)
