Here comes The Rub...

How often do you splurge on yourself?
Better yet, how often do you read the ingredients in your favorite beauty products?

When the ladies of Splurge Skincare approached me asking if I'd like to sample their organic products...the answer was a resounding "YES!". Made in the good ol' U.S.A., Splurge Skincare blends certified organic ingredients and essential oils to create amazing products like their ever popular "The Rub" - an amazing body scrub - and "Lip Buttah" - an ultra moisturizing lip balm.

I was fortunate enough to try both. I sampled a full size tub of the Peppermint and Almond "The Rub" scrubs. Almond was my favorite and I am a picky scrubber. This scrub doesn't leave a greasy residue behind and more importantly, it doesn't hurt to exfoliate. Ever have that in a scrub? Ouch! The Almond scent was subtle and I kid you not, my skin felt intensely soft...light years of a difference from the leathery skin I was gifted from this year's Winter-y mix. {bonus: husband didn't complain about sliding around in the shower  post-scrub!}

The "Lip Buttah" walks the walk. I received the Lemon scent and it truly is like "buttah" for your lips. I apply it every morning before my layer of coral lipstick. This has now become an essential step in my routine. My lipstick doesn't feather off anymore! Of course, I'd wear it alone, too!

Give Splurge Skincare a chance and do something for yourself - for once! Remember, no parabens, sulfates or other chemicals. Just the real deal - cocoa butter, shea, coconut oil and jojoba. The scents range from almond, orange, lemon, chocolate and peppermint. Yum!

Take a cue from the two besties that started Splurge - spoil yourself naturally!

Happy Birthday, Lucy...

Today is my Lucy-Girl's 6th Birthday. Poor girl has been through so much this year and still remains the kind, patient, gentle beagle that she has been since the first day I got her. I am sure she's been a little confused what with all the commotion this year but she's the best dog ever...just a little more tired! {I second that notion} Today calls for pet slushies and extra sweet potato treats. After all, how do you think she got such a svelte physique??!!

Happy Birthday Lucy - we love you! Olivia, too!

Rhinestone cowgirl

Painted rhinestone statement necklaces. In neon. Does it get any better? I am loving this trend and if J.Crew is a little too rich for your blood; {including myself} there are some fabulous options on Etsy. Seeing recycled, vintage necklaces come to life with a touch of color is just so cool. Here are a few of my favorites:

Painted neon rhinestone "Neon Mosaic" bib necklace

neon jewelry painted rhinestone necklace Candy Collar - Best Neon Orange Ever SPECIAL PRICING

One of a Kind Gradient Neon Hand painted Vintage Rhinestone Necklace - Diablesse

Reserved for Chrissie only - One of a Kind Pastel and Neon Handpainted Vintage Rhinestone Necklace

How amazing are these? I wish I had a lick of creativity to come up with ideas like this myself!

Inviting entry ways

I've been thinking of my dream house and how I would decorate it a lot these days. Among the many things that excite me, {storage!} one thing I am really jazzed about is a unique entry way. A place to throw your keys, kick off your shoes, drop your briefcase. Simplicity and color are priorities in my book. And this image is so very doable and right on target.

Now where do I find a lucite Parson's table?

Ciao Friday!

Hi tootsies! The weekend is here and I couldn't be more relieved. After a week away in New England for work; I am excited for some hang time with my babes. Tonight calls for the finale of Top Chef {shhhhh....don't tell!} and some carry out.

Tomorrow morning I am excited to host my first blogger brunch complete with Stella & Dot jewels and mimosas. Currently seeking an awesome breakfast casserole recipe - anyone?! And Sunday, all the ladies in our family are attending my cousin's bridal shower. We are so excited she met her man - such a deserved treat for someone who stayed picky and true to herself! And then...we relax and watch the Oscars. Or more importantly, the Red Carpet.

What's on your agenda? Is it Spring-like weather conditions for you? Do you have the itch?

PS - THANK YOU for all the warm wishes on #2! It was so very sweet and I know I owe some replies so hang with me as I get back into the swing of things from being gone. THANK YOU though, you guys really know how to make someone's day.

Inspiration: Neon

Well here it ode to NEON. And I plan to incorporate this sort of "pop" into my Spring/Summer wardrobe, too. After all, it's not that hard. NEON is everywhere! And if a full ensemble leaves you trembling...take a baby step and start with a statement piece. I promise it's addicting. And all inspired by this lovely piece of art!

Little Miss Manners: blogging etiquette

For most of us, blogging is a hobby; a creative outlet. And for a small, lucky percentage of us, it's a career. Regardless of how you view blogging...I am curious to hear your thoughts on what makes a great blog.

Is it:
  • great, original content
  • more images vs. copy
  • more copy vs. image
  • thousands of followers
  • DIY's
  • creative series that features fellow bloggers
  • giveaways
  • a nicely curated blog roll
  • niche content - example: fashion vs. interiors
  • personal photos and snapshots of the blogger's life
Conversely, I've been wondering what makes a great blogger. You know, the person behind the machine. Perhaps we all have different definitions.

Is it:
  • a comment back to each reader who leaves a comment for you
  • a friendly email in return for a comment
  • a follow back to your reader's blogs {i.e. new Google reader}
And I suppose the final frontier...what makes you stop following a blog? This truly runs the gamut.

I am just thinking out loud and would be curious to hear your opinions. I suppose there is something we can all glean from it and who knows, perhaps this will become a series in and of itself. What do you think of that idea?

...just some deep thoughts for your Tuesday!

Giveaway winner!

source unknown?

...and the winner for last week's giveaway is: #5!

Congratulations to Mandy who wrote:
"Cute dress!! I love your tips..I always forget about getting these tailored instead of returning them. I'd style this for my beach trip to FL in March with some cute flats, a neon skinny belt, and a straw bag. xoxo Mandy"

Mandy: please email me your address so I can ship off your new dress!

Thanks to all who left amazingly creative comments - you guys are awesome!

Moment of silence...

I do have a passion for shoes. It's been cited on this blog for quite some time. We know this. And I am an equal opportunity shopper - from F21 to Urban Outfitters to TJ Maxx to Bloomies - I love 'em all. Nothing excites me or my outfits more than a new pair of shoes to really punch things up.

When I saw the Ciara, I about died. It's equal parts lady-like and flashy. My kinda shoe. It's $425. And I have to tell you I am having quite the emotional reaction to them. I can't stop thinking about them.

Aren't they so Palm Springs? So Mod Squad?
And amazing would these be for your big day? Seriously!

....and be sure to come back this evening- giveaway winner announced!

A dose of Dose Market

Last Sunday I got to experience my first Dose Market with Tabitha, Zoe, Ashleigh and Jen. I've been yearning to check this indoor market out for over a year. What I love about it is that it supports local artisans and entrepreneurs...kind of like a real-life Etsy. Which I am all about. Here are a few pics that Tabitha & Zoe shot and graciously shared with the rest of us.

And yes, Olivia tagged along with me and was such a trooper. I think she was enamored of all the pretty ladies. I don't blame her.

Be sure to check out this little gem next month!

A caffeinated Friday...puhleaz!

illustration via Apple Tea
Good morning all. This was one of those busted weeks and I try to refrain from complaining but I had to tell ya...cuz, ya know...we're friends and all.

So, Olivia is teething apparently. And apparently teething is usually accompanied by a cold. What that means for me is that I have slept through the night once since Sunday. {I know, total martyr card here} And I can see those little, pearly white jerks just ready to pop through but you can't blame hurts! So yes, today will be a day of consuming large quantities of caffeine so that I can coast through my meetings. "Coast" being the operative word.

In other news, we had a couples massage this week and that was lovely. You know it's a good massage when you catch yourself slurping up some drool before it hits the table.

...and we had a fabulous giveaway which has generated some fun responses. Thank you! It's still going on thru Monday so be sure to enter!

...and finally; I am looking forward to a photography boot camp with my partner in crime tomorrow followed by an engagement party. BTW, what do you bring to engagement parties these days? I plan to hit Armitage Ave. after my meetings.

Cheers kids...hope you have a restful weekend. Be sure to leave work at work and catch up with the ones you love!

Litany of Love

  9. Really Charlotte Russe? I am kinda impressed!

Giveaway: for the vintage lover!

Hi ladies! I have a lovely giveaway from my favorite online vintage retailer - El Vintage! I've ordered here in the past...see here. The owner, Emily, could not be sweeter and she always has loads of great inventory to satisfy your vintage itch.

Here's a helpful tip:
  • if something doesn't fit you, and this is common, don't shy away from a piece you love. Simply take it to your local tailor and...
    • hack off that hem
    • cut off the arms
    • cinch in the waist
    • create a new bust line
Voila! It's worth'll have a totally unique look that fits your body which is the most important element in any thrifting find.

Emily bequeathed me with this lovely little number and I was a smitten kitten. You can see the original hem to the left of the first image...and my desired length to the right of that image. I styled this dress the way I'd wear it for a Friday lunch meeting or a girlie weekend brunch. You can also make it winter-ready by throwing on some wool tights and riding boots complete with a cream turtle neck underneath.

Since neutrals are all the rage this season...throw in a pop of color. Maybe a coral statement necklace? A canary clutch? Red heels?

Tell me how you'd style it! A random winner will be chosen to win this vintage gem next Monday, 2/20/12.
Here's what I'll need from you:
  • a comment on how you'd style this piece and where you'd wear it
  • a visit and to El Vintage's Facebook page
  • a visit and a comment to El Vintage's style blog
  • visit El Vintage's Etsy store
  • you must be a follower of 101 things
  • tweets earn extra credit. El Vintage's handle & mine
Good luck! Check back on Monday!

Five Winter Steals & Splurges: meet Alexa of The Short and the Sweet of It

I love Alexa's blog for lots of reasons. It's loaded with inspirational photos and graphic elements that are easy on the eyes. I especially love her outfit collage boards. Like this one. It's a Cali girl's collection of the best things in life: great recipes, colorful fashion posts, sweet DIY ideas and beautiful photography. Not a bad way to start out your Monday, eh? And here's the icing on the all bloggers from the Winter Steals and Splurge series; she's a real sweetheart which makes supporting her blog something I look forward to. Meet Alexa!

Splurges and Steals
Hello lovely readers of 101 things i love! It's Alexa from the Short and the Sweet of It and I'm so happy that Johanna asked me to participate in her Five Winter Splurges and Steals series.

Winter might be my second favorite season (fall is my first). But I just love bundling up in cute tights and fashionable scarves, so bring on the cold I say. (Of course I live in San Diego, so perhaps cold is all relative). Anyway I would LOVE this Ruffle coat from Anthropologie because of it's gorgeous rust color and the feminine detailing around the neck. If only it wasn't $150.

I love anything Kate Spade, I mean who doesn't right? And I have a special place in my heart for yellow. This adorable little white and yellow Kate Spade striped scarf would look lovely and bright this winter. What's not so lovely and bright: the $148 price tag.

I am not a huge lipstick fan actually, but I've been jumping on the red lips bandwagon as of late and I would be thrilled to put on a little Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture for a pop of color. For $30 I don't know...but it's hard to resist.

Absolutely adore this Target Tote hand bag, and it would fit my laptop and all of Mila's crazy baby toys. Best part is: it's $20!

This last one I actually own and I love them. Cute little Urban Outfitters knee high tights, that I pretty much wear And they are $9.99. Can't beat it!

Thanks again Johanna for having me over at your sweet little spot in the blogging world! Don't forget to come visit me and Kirby at the Short and the Sweet of It! xo

Thanks Alexa! I'm lovin' those knee high tights...would be cute with your Anthro jacket, no? xo

What I would give...

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I've been lamenting the fact that it's nearly impossible to get a ticket to Next. I would give my left arm to eat there just once. Not kidding. I read about people who've eaten there 3-4x's and I will admit, I am jealous. I am on a mission these days to obtain 2 tickets. Admittedly, I have to dine there during the el Bulli phase or I might die with regret.

No pressure. Just a dying wish.

Fashion Week Friday

If you have even the smallest remote interest in social media; there's one thing you can be sure of - NY Fashion Week is in full swing. From BCBG to Charlotte Ronson to Derek Lam to Jenny Packham....all the big players are out. Oh to be a fly on the wall! It's always so fun to follow!

Back on the homestead, us Midwestern fashionistas are supposedly receiving the gift of more snow this weekend so our plans include a possible Mexican fiesta tonight at a local gem just steps from our house. Of course, a visit to the grandparents is in order and a final highlight includes our first visit to Dose Market. Hip, hip! I'm really excited to introduce Olivia to her blogger aunts. A milestone, indeed.

Whatever your plans are for the weekend - have a good one!
And thanks to all that left comments on my vacation post - so helpful!

Litany of Love

Baby in a basket.

Some people put laundry in a basket. Some people put magazines in a basket.
We put baby in the basket. ...and you would, too if you realized just how happy she was to be in it.
{this was after she took out every single toy and spread it all around our living room}

Modern day florals.

The floral trend is resurfacing again in fashion. Admittedly, I was never a fan. There's something very "Saved By the Bell" about it all. Not necessarily a bad thing but I struggle with incorporating florals into my wardrobe. That was until I saw this Topshop dress. Now, this is a dress I can get behind. Kind of a modern day take complete with a pinch of color-blocking. And you know there was never a color-blocked anything that I didn't like!

What do you think? Will you be incorporating florals into your wardrobe this Spring? I am pretty excited about new color trends, too. Bring on the mint and coral!

Round table: What do you wear to bed?

story of my life.

Pajamas. We all have our favorites. Some prefer the sultry look. Some go for comfort {read: me} And some go for cozy cuteness. Try as I might over the years, sweats usually win because of the cold temps. And when Summer rolls around...I get really creative and sleep in a tshirt. I knew it was time for a change when my mom came to sit for Olivia  and took one look at my pajamas and said..."whoa, looks like it's time to get some new pj's?!" Apparently a beat-up White Sox tee is not sexy. Who knew?

So...I ask you, dear readers: what do you wear to bed? Looks like I need to revisit my P.M. wardrobe!

All images found on my "Pajama" board

P.S. Look at this little angel nugget!
angel wing pajamas

***Update: The verdict is in. Comfort outweighs sultry. Looks like I am not alone. {ha}***
