Precision

When I saw this on Cup of Jo via Swiss Miss, I kinda blacked out. It was such a genius song selection for this mini masterpiece. And well, you know I love ballet. Ballet is such an intense, athletic art...it fascinates me. And to blend current music with traditional art; well, the result always knocks my socks off. There should be an entire ballet dedicated to Radiohead. The end.

Guffaw Friday

My husband send this to me...source unknown. Anyone? Seems perfect for a Friday, no?

After this week's schedule and an inspection to boot - woot! woot! - I learned that it does take two to make a thing go right. Actually, it takes a village but we are moving along. Inspection cleared. Next up - move in date!

How was your week?
Are you ready for April and the bunny?

Have a swell weekend...whatever it is that's on your books!!

Are you "curious" about Olivia's 1st birthday?

Because you've all been dying to know about Olivia's birthday plans...I figured I'd stop torturing you.

Olivia's first love via the boob tube was Curious George. {that's when we discovered the magic of cartoons and what a fantastic babysitter they are...whaa? I mean...anyhoo} So we went with that theme because any good parent knows that when you know all the words to a cartoon theme song - it's time to make a party out of it.

Our brilliant friend created the invitations based on my Pinterest obsession. She's good like that. In fact you should check her website out. Like now...I'll wait. She just started a Tumblr, too. Go ahead...I have time. Mmmm, kay. Where were we? So the top portion is the front and the bottom is the back {obv.!} It's cute isn't it?

Then we got all crazy with our Etsy selves and ordered her a banner and you know every banner deserves cookie favors...err, something. And finally, as much as Olivia would love to wear her "birthday suit" - we have little boy people attending so that won't be necessary hence we ordered this in case she can't remember which birthday this is. It could happen?

And then there's this:

...which I will be making thanks to this class. Thinking of giving it a test run on Sunday.
Birthday for kids
And that's all she wrote. Two hours of kids running and screaming, a sweaty husband standing post at the grill, sticky fingers, and a lot of frosting. Sounds 'bout right!

Lash Genius

I'm not much into gimmicks. Especially where cosmetics are concerned. Usually this leads to some sort of pink eye or rash. Who's with me?

I do love Anastasia Beverly Hills, however. See here. They're good to me and so are their products so while this post is sponsored it's also the truth. Onward...they sent me a new product, Lash Genius, and even though I was skeptical - I know this product will come in handy. Like when I go into labor with Dos and want to look infinitely prettier than I did with Olivia. True story. Why you ask? Let me tell you...

Lash Genius is a waterproof topcoat for your lashes which means you get to apply your favorite mascara per usual. After it is completely dry - you would apply this as a secondary coat. In a nutshell, it makes every mascara waterproof if you desire such things. I like to think this would be the perfect product for brides, cry babies, soap opera actresses and pregnant women in labor. Like me. Don't tell me Beyonce didn't have full make up on when lil' Ivy Blue arrived...sure she did! Which is why you need this because it's only $21.

photos courtesy of Anastasia Beverly Hills
Did I mention that it also creates more volume and dries quickly? It does - think dramatic, long lashes that look real. The opposite of Kim Kardashian's, really. And they are soft to the touch!

Have I sold you enough? Give it a shot. I've been wearing it for four days now and it washes off super easy. Follow them on Twitter, too! #LashGenius

P.S. You don't have to be in labor to see the benefits of this product. xo

I can't but you can!

With the purchase of a new home comes restrictions on my Spring budget. Read: non-existent. But that's ok. Maternity clothes aren't that cool; trust me.

That said, just because I can't spend doesn't mean you shouldn't. And yes, you're welcome.

Those peach wedges rank pretty high on my birthday list.

What would you choose?
What's on your Spring wish list?

Can't bear not to share!

Who said Monday's were dull?

After a whirlwind weekend that left us flat out exhausted...I have some exciting news to share. Husband just called to say that the offer we made this morning on "Project Dream House" was accepted. Shock would be a good word to describe my face upon hearing this. Well, shock and excitement.

We've had quite the tumultuous go-around with selling/buying and after 4.5 months...we had a stroke of luck! Which is a good thing because O isn't getting any lighter and this belly isn't getting any smaller!

Fingers crossed for a flawless inspection and everything in between this week.

Now...who wants to come over for a packing party?

Shop it forward: Green Goddess Boutique

photos courtesy Green Goddess Boutique
It was a typical work day for me...carefully balancing conference calls while squeezing in a quick errand/caffeine run with a pit stop to pick up a hostess gift for a girl's night. Sound familiar? Luckily, Lincoln Park is a hot bed for quaint boutiques when I'm in a pinch and last Wednesday was no exception.

I thew my hazards on and popped into Green Goddess Boutique - pure impulse. 'Course I was averaging about 80 mph when I was punched in the face with an accessory extravaganza. After catching my breath, I made my way around the store...delicate chains, buttery Moroccan poufs, vibrant scarves, raw gemstone earrings, luxe candles...I was in heaven. Had it not been a work day...I could have spent hours in here.

I think the biggest surprise is that despite being a boutique, Green Goddess Boutique has a myriad of pricing to please everyone's wallet...not at all pretentious like it's counter parts housed on the same street. The prices were reasonable. I ended up picking a marbled compact for my hostess gift complete with an engraved octopus adorning the front. It's the kind of beautiful accessory every girl should have sitting in their boudoir.

If I could create a birthday registry...it would be here, let me tell you. {husband!} In fact, I've already been back to stare at a beaded Greek evil eye bracelet. I love their philosophy - sustainable shopping from all over the world. Vintage, green, recycled and reused -- that's what you'll find here.

"Experience The Green Goddess, where we transcend fads, understand the mix and embrace a boho sense of adventure. Leather poufs and vintage trays from Morocco. Silver inland jewelry from Tibet. Hand-woven knits from Bali. Beaded purses and scarves from India. Soy candles from Spain and so much more!"

Follow 'em on Twitter, too! This is not a sponsored post - just utter adoration for a new find walking distance from my house.

Stop and listen...

It's a long one...but so worth the read. Promise.
  • Stop spending time with the wrong people. – Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.  If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you.  You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot.  Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth.  And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.
  • Stop running from your problems. – Face them head on.  No, it won’t be easy.  There is no person in the world capable of flawlessly handling every punch thrown at them.  We aren’t supposed to be able to instantly solve problems.  That’s not how we’re made.  In fact, we’re made to get upset, sad, hurt, stumble and fall.  Because that’s the whole purpose of living – to face problems, learn, adapt, and solve them over the course of time.  This is what ultimately molds us into the person we become.
  • Stop lying to yourself. – You can lie to anyone else in the world, but you can’t lie to yourself.  Our lives improve only when we take chances, and the first and most difficult chance we can take is to be honest with ourselves.  Read The Road Less Traveled.
  • Stop putting your own needs on the back burner. – The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.  Yes, help others; but help yourself too.  If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.
  • Stop trying to be someone you’re not. – One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else.  Someone will always be prettier, someone will always be smarter, someone will always be younger, but they will never be you. Don’t change so people will like you.  Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
  • Stop trying to hold onto the past. – You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.
  • Stop being scared to make a mistake. – Doing something and getting it wrong is at least ten times more productive than doing nothing.  Every success has a trail of failures behind it, and every failure is leading towards success.  You end up regretting the things you did NOT do far more than the things you did.
  • Stop berating yourself for old mistakes. – We may love the wrong person and cry about the wrong things, but no matter how things go wrong, one thing is for sure, mistakes help us find the person and things that are right for us.  We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.  Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come.
  • Stop trying to buy happiness. – Many of the things we desire are expensive.  But the truth is, the things that really satisfy us are totally free – love, laughter and working on our passions.
  • Stop exclusively looking to others for happiness. – If you’re not happy with who you are on the inside, you won’t be happy in a long-term relationship with anyone else either.  You have to create stability in your own life first before you can share it with someone else.  Read Stumbling on Happiness.
  • Stop being idle. – Don’t think too much or you’ll create a problem that wasn’t even there in the first place.  Evaluate situations and take decisive action.  You cannot change what you refuse to confront.  Making progress involves risk.  Period!  You can’t make it to second base with your foot on first.
  • Stop thinking you’re not ready. – Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises.  Because most great opportunities in life force us to grow beyond our comfort zones, which means we won’t feel totally comfortable at first.
  • Stop getting involved in relationships for the wrong reasons. – Relationships must be chosen wisely.  It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.  There’s no need to rush.  If something is meant to be, it will happen – in the right time, with the right person, and for the best reason. Fall in love when you’re ready, not when you’re lonely.
  • Stop rejecting new relationships just because old ones didn’t work. – In life you’ll realize that there is a purpose for everyone you meet. Some will test you, some will use you and some will teach you.  But most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.
  • Stop trying to compete against everyone else. – Don’t worry about what others doing better than you.  Concentrate on beating your own records every day.  Success is a battle between YOU and YOURSELF only.
  • Stop being jealous of others. – Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own.  Ask yourself this:  “What’s something I have that everyone wants?”
  • Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. – Life’s curveballs are thrown for a reason – to shift your path in a direction that is meant for you.  You may not see or understand everything the moment it happens, and it may be tough.  But reflect back on those negative curveballs thrown at you in the past.  You’ll often see that eventually they led you to a better place, person, state of mind, or situation. So smile!  Let everyone know that today you are a lot stronger than you were yesterday, and you will be.
  • Stop holding grudges. – Don’t live your life with hate in your heart. You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate. Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.”  It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.” Forgiveness is the answer… let go, find peace, liberate yourself!  And remember, forgiveness is not just for other people, it’s for you too. If you must, forgive yourself, move on and try to do better next time.
  • Stop letting others bring you down to their level. – Refuse to lower your standards to accommodate those who refuse to raise theirs.
  • Stop wasting time explaining yourself to others. – Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe it anyway.  Just do what you know in your heart is right.
  • Stop doing the same things over and over without taking a break. – The time to take a deep breath is when you don’t have time for it.  If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly.
  • Stop overlooking the beauty of small moments. – Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.  The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.
  • Stop trying to make things perfect. – The real world doesn’t reward perfectionists, it rewards people who get things done.  Read Getting Things Done.
  • Stop following the path of least resistance. – Life is not easy, especially when you plan on achieving something worthwhile.  Don’t take the easy way out.  Do something extraordinary.
  • Stop acting like everything is fine if it isn’t. – It’s okay to fall apart for a little while.  You don’t always have to pretend to be strong, and there is no need to constantly prove that everything is going well.  You shouldn’t be concerned with what other people are thinking either – cry if you need to – it’s healthy to shed your tears.  The sooner you do, the sooner you will be able to smile again.
  • Stop blaming others for your troubles. – The extent to which you can achieve your dreams depends on the extent to which you take responsibility for your life.  When you blame others for what you’re going through, you deny responsibility – you give others power over that part of your life.
  • Stop trying to be everything to everyone. – Doing so is impossible, and trying will only burn you out.  But making one person smile CAN change the world.  Maybe not the whole world, but their world.  So narrow your focus.
  • Stop worrying so much. – Worry will not strip tomorrow of its burdens, it will strip today of its joy.  One way to check if something is worth mulling over is to ask yourself this question: “Will this matter in one year’s time?  Three years?  Five years?”  If not, then it’s not worth worrying about.
  • Stop focusing on what you don’t want to happen. – Focus on what you do want to happen.  Positive thinking is at the forefront of every great success story.  If you awake every morning with the thought that something wonderful will happen in your life today, and you pay close attention, you’ll often find that you’re right.
  • Stop being ungrateful. – No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life.  Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.  Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.
Wise words someone shared with me.

How to nap your way through vacation...as told by Olivia.

She's a real party animal, huh?

"I do" Friday!

I love a good wedding. And tonight's no exception. My cousin is getting married. It should be a raucous time with a crazy amount of cousins cajoling it up. Despite being 100% sober, I can't lie that I am excited for a few belly laughs. Anytime I can attend a wedding with both my husband and brother...well, hilarity ensues. And guess who's the designated chauffeur. Take a wild guess.

What are you up to this weekend? Didn't the week just fly by? Come on Spring!!
xo

Litany of Love

Today's Litany of Love is focused on the home. Ballard Designs to be exact. All I can think about besides Dos is decorating a new home and finding this catalog on my doorstep definitely contributed to my overall confusion in aesthetics. Join me won't you?

  1. I'm obsessed with these garden seats. I want one in every color.
  2. How sweet would this bench be at the foot of your bed?
  3. A must for out of town guests!
  4. I'm torn between this console or a lucite one in the entry way. Confused much?
  5. Cannot wait to have a grown up headboard...finally.
  6. A great sunburst mirror to sit above #4.
  7. A sleek industrial piece to off set the feminine.
  8. A pedestal for cake + champagne? Yeah, this picture sold me.
  9. Storage that is still manly enough.
  10. My mom has these...I love 'em.

Vacation face

This is what the first night of vacation looked like. Smiles.

No furrowed eyebrows or under eye circles.

Just pure joy at missing bedtimes and eating alfresco.

I miss it already!

Round table: Do you dress for your man or your friends {or for you}?

photos courtesy The Cut
It's a question that's been pondered over many a glass of wine. And the answers never get old for me.

So...
Do you dress for your man or your friends?
Or even better...yourself?

My answer?
I think I do a little bit of both.

After baby{ies}, I still want to put together and have my husband think I am attractive. A little lipstick, a shower, attire that is not made of sweatshirt material, a polished ponytail - that's all you need.

On the other hand, I work at looking "cute" in front of my gal pals, too. I like to stay on trend and prove to them that I am not all "momma" or all "business" all the time. Kind of like a hybrid mullet...that's how I would describe my style.

But, I digress...and well, that's a weird comparison, Johanna.
Anyhoo...love to hear your answers. Hit me!

Travel inspiration: beach hair

Today's photo inspiration is all about vacation hair. The kind where you just wake up and go. And the addition of sea salt makes it even better. Enjoy!

xo,
Virgin Pina Coladas and Pink Sunsets

source unknown. anybody?

Travel inspiration: reading

Today's photo inspiration is all about the beach read. I think vacation is the only time I get to read...so yeah, I'm averaging a book a year. Normal. But, nothing compares to reading on the beach or by the pool in between quick dips.

xo,
Virgin Pina Coladas and Pink Sunsets

Travel inspiration: palm trees

Today's inspiration is about my favorite tree on the planet. My mom's, too! The palm tree. There's something so graceful about those lean trunks and wispy leaves. That's when you know you've arrived. Do you concur?

Travel inspiration: the one-piece

Today's photo inspiration is all about the one-piece. There was a time when I loathed one-piece bathing suits. But, now in my ripe old age - I think they're kinda sexy. Less is more, right? That's what I keep telling myself and my burgeoning belly. Nothing says hot like a pasty Midwesterner and a big belly.

Virgin Pina Coladas and Pink Sunsets

Travel inspiration: the nap

Today's inspiration is a favorite of mine. Vacation naps. Aren't they the best? A midday nap makes the world right. If only it were allowed in the corporate world. Granted, our naps now revolve around someone else's but hey...it's a start.

Travel inspiration: tropical colors

Today's inspiration packs a punch - a tropical punch of color that is! When else do you get to rock coral toes, a big floppy hat and bare legs with sundresses? I'll tell you...vacation! I love that it's perfect acceptable to let your hair air dry. I love that a swipe of lipstick is all you need. And I most certainly love the bright garb that is a requirement on all resorts.

xo,
Virgin Pina Coladas and Pink Sunsets

Travel inspiration: handstand contests

Today's inspiration is probably something we've all been doing since we were kids. The handstand contest. Remember these? I generally rock these given that I can hold my breath for an eternity. Ask the husband. I womp him every time. And just remember, you're never too old for a good ol' fashion handstand contest.

Citrus-y Friday!

This is it! The final countdown before we depart for the Sunshine State. Just looking at this picture makes me happy. All the citrus one can devour. The best part about it...we have family house sitting and taking care of Lucy-girl the entire time. How awesome is that?

I am looking forward to decluttering my mind and soaking up some sun - with SPF 30, of course. And yes, baby has major SPF, too and a sun hat! Enjoy your weekend tootsies...some vacation eye candy to come throughout the week! xo

Litany of Love

This week's Litany of Love is all things West Elm. It's been awhile since I've shopped there and after receiving their sale email this week...it opened my eyes to a few key pieces I'd like in our new home.

  1. The cutest Easter napkins ever!
  2.  A pouf I am coveting.
  3. I saw this side table in the catalog and it was immediate love.
  4. Something about these hand towels screams summer beach cottage to me.
  5. This is my dream kitchen table.
  6. I am feeling this bedding for our next bedroom.
  7. Lacquer trays are the perfect addition to any room!
  8. I very much love this buffet table since it already matches the WE chairs we bought 2 years ago!
  9. Headboards are so stately. I adore this nail head one.
  10. I mean, we all need this, right?

Thanks again to Handsome Alice for an amazing giveaway! The winner is: #9!

What fun colors! I'd pair this with something simple like a t-shirt and dark skinny jeans - gotta let that necklace shine :-)

Congrats Gloria! Email me your address and I will ship off tomorrow!

Thanks to all who played!

Dude, I get it!

I have to tell you; we're pretty excited about "Dos". That's what my husband so affectionately nicknamed baby #2. Fitting. And while I have the said worries that everyone seems to be vocalizing these days - the positives far outweigh the negative. You see, my brother and I are 6.5 years apart and while we have a wonderful relationship now...there was a definite gap for years due to the different stages we were in. Still - I wouldn't have it any other way!

That said, you'd be surprised at the responses I've received since announcing "Dos". Here's a small sampling:
  • Wow, you're a brave woman!
  • Man, you guys don't waste time.
  • Chuckles in disbelief {shakes head} - for the record, this is my favorite. It's perfect parts condescending meets rude.
  • Silence.
  • Hey, that's awesome! Good for you guys.
  • Wow, Olivia is going to be a great big sister.
  • Shut up!
For the most part, people are positive and sweet knowing how hard it was to conceive and how hard it is for couples in general these days. My kids will be exactly 16 months apart. And while I wasn't raised being super close in age to my brother...I think it could be really cool for Olivia and Dos to be close. {hey, that rhymes!} They will go to the same elementary schools, maybe have some of the same friends and be great playmates. How cool is that?

I wouldn't say I am dreading the work - but let's just say I know what's in store. And yes, to the nay-sayers, I know the next 3 years of my life will consist of an utter lack of sleep and some tough moments. And yes, I'm totally aware that we will have two chitlins under 2 years of age. And yes, I realize I will have mega baby weight to lose and it will probably be super difficult to leave the house without spit up of some sort on my blouse. Yes, I know this. But, you know what I have to say to all of this?

I feel lucky. I feel blessed. We wanted a family and we got it. And we still like each other - all of us - after one big year of change. Olivia has been a blast and an accomplishment. Our biggest accomplishment to date.

Now how can having another baby ever be a bad thing? I'm thinking it will be nothing short of AMAZING!  {I say this as Olivia is leaning on me whilst watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse...mornings are the best...Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is like crack to babies, FYI!!}

PS - stay tuned; you may be the winner of my giveaway!

Spring makeup

photos found here
Today's post is part deux of yesterday's post. We're talking Spring makeup. And while it's normal to see some rather bold looks at a trade show for beauty...there is quite a bit that we can take away and incorporate into our daily routines. The above collage illustrates two major trends in makeup: bold lips and wing tip eyes. If there's anything you master this season - please let it be the wing tip. And the old rules do not apply anymore, ladies. Throw on your boldest lip stain or lipstick and rock it out! ...and here's a great tutorial on how to create the perfect wing tip at home!

A few tips to keep in mind when creating this look at home:
  • start with a fresh face and clean palate
  • invest in a good eye primer. I like Urban Decay
  • apply a neutral, soft color to eyelids - that's all you need; no contouring necessary
  • when it comes to lips - moisturize before you apply that bold color; less feathering later
  • skip the lip liner - nowadays the lipsticks stay put and fill in all the lines for ya
  • be brave! have fun! the bolder, the better. My favorite is this Revlon color.
  • go subtle on the cheekers - little blush will do ya.
That's it. Pretty much the equivalent to 5-minute beauty yet you'll be so current. You're welcome!

Spring hair.

photos found here
Monday marked the end of America's Beauty Show @ McCormick Place. My company and I hosted a booth all three days. It was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. And I cannot even sum up all the things I learned from cosmetic trends to skincare to yes, of course, hair trends. You guys would be amazed at the new technology, gadgets and products coming our way. And the prices on products...let's just say I bought 3 lip glosses for $4 a piece. Cheap!

But, enough about me. Let's talk hair. Curl to the beauty industry is what color blocking is to the fashion industry. Tight curls, loose curls, romantic curls...it's all very major right now. And the less "done up" you appear...the better. I found curling texturizers and finishing sprays galore. Of note: try Oribe dry texturizing spray and Michael O'Rourke big hair powder. You could have pin straight like moi and still achieve the looks shown above. Amazeballs. And truly this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Grab your hot tools, ladies. The forecast reads CURLS!

Monday, Monday

Morning! Today's post is going to be short, sweet and probably a bit unoriginal. {sorry for that!} Today is the last day of my trade show duties hence I wasn't able to spend any time on le blog this weekend. I promise to get back to y'all. Hang with me.

A big congratulations to our friends Julie & Mikk for welcoming their brand, new baby boy into the world yesterday!

...and don't forget about this!
