All Hallow's Eve

Happy Halloween hotties! We're kicking it at home with colds but that won't stop us from dressing up and passing out gobs of candy.

...and then we head out to Austin! Yippee - we're still accepting eating suggestions so hit me up!

...finally, for those who asked - husband won the pumpkin contest AGAIN! Mine was the Mickey Mouse pumpkin for Liv and his was the toothy pumpkin. #boo

The perfect bootie.

Mulberry ankle booties

Mulberry ankle booties (see more suede booties)

I sorta think this is it. While it is pretty much like handing over your paycheck...imagine the possibilities.

If I get a bonus this year - this is how I'd spend it.
Frivolous, I know.
Call it a push present to myself.

A weekend in three pictures.

We slept.
We cooked.
We sipped.
We watched football {and squirrels}

It was nice.

A Friday post + a delightfully simple recipe.

Hi friends! Another week, another weekend! Today, I am going to share a recipe I tried out of Everyday Food. Their recipes never fail me {except for one - don't try the lemony pasta with goat cheese and spinach} and it requires one main ingredient: pumpkin!

Did you know that one 1/2 cup of pumpkin has a mere 42 calories and provides a full serving of veggies? It's also 14% of your daily quota for fiber and has immunity-boosting vitamin A, C and potassium. Super food, indeed.

Pumpkin Soup:
  • 3 cans of pumpkin puree
  • 8 cups of water
  • 8 cubes of chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper
  • 4 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Heat chicken broth to a boil. Add in 3 cans of pumpkin puree as well as all spices. Simmer for an hour. Serve and top with cilantro. Delish. {next time I plan on adding a dollop of creme fraiche}

...and some wonderful links I ran across this week:

A terrific DIY link if you like sequins and tshirts.

I need to obtain this Nate Berkus lamp. I've always loved woodsy decor.

The cutest fringe boots for your tot - and to match mom. Bonus!

These shelves have been all over blog-land. I am dying to spray paint them gold and put them in our bedroom.

Ballet pink blouses always get me. This one is particularly affordable.

The polls are open...hip hip Halloween!

I have lost this contest every year and almost debated not carving. {see here and here and here} Then I quickly shook outta my slump. It's Halloween, dammit! I am Captain Halloween and I'll be darned if I go out a quitter.

So here are the pumpkins. Husband and I each carved one.

What's your vote?

Family pictures

Having a sense of humor is necessary for survival these days. And while I cannot pretend to always be on-point and in the best of moods; I will admit that two littles provides endless laughs if you're so inclined.

I present to you our family picture:
{i.e. the one that should be on the face of our Christmas card this year}
photo courtesy our nanny friend, Nadia
Yup, this is what last Friday looked like. A toddler that was overdue for a nap and a newborn that kept falling asleep. And then there's us. Out of 200-something pictures...I am guessing there are three good ones for the keeping.

Cheesy idea - yes. Hilarious - also yes.

Hi! It's been a pretty good week around these parts. We took family pics, went on long walks and tried on Halloween costumes. Not bad by many people's standards. Olivia is smitten with her cat costume to the point of screaming if I try and take it off her. She also figured out how to climb on our ottoman so I am predicting an emergency room visit any day now. Cripes!

Here are some fun links I came across this week:

A new Chicago company, sidetour, launched and it's really rad. You can learn how to make classic cocktails to creating a 6-course Indian dinner with Indian beers. {I bought my brother the mixology class}

A new-to-me blog that I fell in love with immediately. She's funny...real funny.

Now this is a makeover that I am envious of. What a score!

I read this post on benign neglect and it was so comforting and relatable.

I love these navy pumps.

If I had an unlimited costume budget -
I'd buy this dress, a wig, striped tights, killer pumps and throw on some dramatic makeup.

The day that Olivia broke her baby crib...

I'm always cognizant of this blog becoming too "baby focused" but this is too good to pass up. And apologies in advance for the dim photos taken by my phone. On to the story...

Like most nights, the girls and I have to find something to occupy our time between 4:30 and 6:30 when dad gets home. This is also the bewitching hour for children. Somehow they become completely unraveled. Which equals lots of fun. This particular evening we were in the playroom and I was nursing Lola on the couch watching Olivia. I must have turned away for a split second because she literally climbed into her itty bitty baby doll crib which you see pictured above.

Apparently sister is a healthy weight because the bottom fell out and so did Olivia. When I peered over the couch she was sitting on the floor in the middle of her crib like a prisoner. I'd by lying if I said that I didn't become hysterical. And I'm sorry to admit that. I'm not sorry. It was one of those parenting moments that are worth capturing on camera and texting to your entire address book.

You can observe her confusion and frustration. I can assure you I helped her get out in what seemed like the longest 10 seconds of her life.

If her face and these two pictures speak a thousand words...than Olivia...I'm right there with you, sister!
{P.S. check out Lucy. You know she's thinking, "I'm not helping her outta there!"}

Recipe: pumpkin seeds!

With a pumpkin carving party under our belt; we knew we had a tasty snack in store on Sunday. It's been a tradition that my husband and I look forward to every year and one that's actually better for you than candy!

Here's a quick, simple recipe - you'll enjoy every bit of this savory treat. Perfect for football noshing!

You'll need:
  • pumpkin seeds
  • paprika or chili powder
  • sea salt
  • pepper
  • olive oil
Set your oven to 400 degrees. On a large baking sheet, drizzle olive oil. Rinse the pumpkin innards off your seeds and dry off on a clean towel. Spread an even layer on your baking sheet. Add a pinch of sea salt, chili powder and pepper. You can use paprika, too - I lean towards chili powder because I favor a little more heat. With a spatula, mix and coat the seeds thoroughly. Place in oven for 25-30 minutes {pending on your oven} and keep a watchful eye for a golden hue.

Let cool and enjoy. Happy healthy Halloween snacking!

P.S. A friend told us to add a dab of honey, too. Sweet and savory!

I've told you how geeked out I get about Halloween. And if you need any indication that we've been stocking up on sweets and should touch the space bar on my laptop. Read: sticky.

It's very Fall-ish in our house. And if it were up to me, I'd keep it going for a few more months.

16 more days!

Is it Friday?

Well guys...rumor has it that it is indeed Friday. Thank goodness! I have to tell you I've been a bad blogger because we lost the internets {double doh!} this week. Hence my lack of comments and delayed posts. Did you ever realize how much you rely on Google? Well I can confirm it's a whole lot. I couldn't look anything up and I miss y'all!

So, let's hang up the work week and find one of these:
Cheers! xo

BaubleBar + bloggers

It takes me hours to sort through all the emails I receive but one in particular stood out yesterday. A collaboration between BaubleBar & Atlantic Pacific. Coincidentally, Atlantic Pacific has been on my blog roll for as long as I can remember. I mean, look at her:

The epitome of lady-like, great taste.

Well, the collaboration is nothing short of perfection.
Here are my favorites:

All in the details...

I was more than excited when I found a little email from Zara announcing their Home Collection had finally launched and was available online. And let me tell did not disappoint. As my style has changed dramatically when it comes to home goods - I found everything to be spot on and oh-so-perfect for future room renovation projects. To boot, it's all priced very reasonably. Here are a few items that caught my eye:

Vernon Tea Pot
Amazing, right? They even have a Zara Home Kids. I am so impressed.

Have you guys checked it out?
I am pretty sure those gold nesting tables are going to be on my list to Santa.
Did I just say that?

What would you tell you?

It's easy to get inspired by Pinterest and blogging in general. And that's exactly what happened to me yesterday. I came across Heather's blog post and I thought...gosh, if I knew what I know now!

Here's what I would tell a younger version of myself:
  1. Don't marry for the big white dress and wedding. Marry because you're ready - even if that means you're the last of your friends to walk down the aisle.
  2. Credit cards are not your friend...stay away and use only for emergencies. Friday night closet raids are not an emergency.
  3. Moving in with someone before marriage is always a good idea. Trust your instincts.
  4. Stop starving yourself. It actually slows down your metabolism, genius.
  5. You should take more business classes @ Iowa. They will come in handy.
  6. If you feel like your friendship with someone is probably is. It can't be all you giving with no return.
  7. Stop drinking cheap wine. That's why you're puking the next morning. Oh and you should probably eat before drinking...see #4.
  8. You should live on your own before you move in with any man. Trust.
  9. If you want to be something or pursue a certain career goal - go for it! The time is strings attached.
  10. You will conceive and have kids...stop worrying.
  11. Travel, travel, travel. You should do more of it and often.
  12. Be nicer to your parents - they will always have your back.
  13. Don't even consider dying your hair brown. That would be a mistake.
  14. Floss more.
  15. Ask for that raise. You deserve it. Don't be a human door mat.
  16. Take a chance. Take a risk. Don't worry what others think - that's the only way you'll grow.
  17. Don't date a man on the rebound - especially one who just had his heart broken. You can't be her.
  18. If you're going to get a tattoo...put it somewhere you can conceal it.
  19. Remember you're brother is 6.5 years younger than you. Give him a chance...he'll catch up to you.
  20. Do what you love if you're going to have to work everyday.
  21. You don't have to be a stay-at-home mom if you don't want to.
  22. Sometimes what you're searching for is right under your nose!
  23. Visit your parents more often.
  24. You'll grow out of this whole "designer denim" trend - don't buy so many pairs, sister!
  25. Buy Apple shares. {courtesy the husband}
  26. Always be able to support yourself - don't rely on anyone else.
What about you?
What would you tell yourself?

I get by with a little help from my friends.

It's been challenging to find "me/internet time" these days. I feel frustrated that I can't surf and get inspired like I used to. Sometimes I pick up the computer and 20 seconds later it's back down because someone needs tending to. It's to be expected but I was wondering if I could lean on you guys?

Share with me some amazing blogs you've come across. I need to get inspired again. And I'm sure you don't want to read endless posts about my family forever. I want to get back to my roots, the things I love: cooking | fashion | career | decor | travel | art | DIY.

What do you have for me? Point me in the direction of some new-to-you/me blogs. I'd love to hear what inspires you these days. xo

Warning: adorable overload!

If you've been following my blog long have become aware of my infatuation with Halloween. It truly is my favorite. And what's not to like...costumes, candy, awesome decorations and let's not forget pumpkin patches! Having kids has elevated my infatuation ever so slightly. As in...I start thinking about their costumes roughly mid-Summer. And I'm not sorry. My husband knows better than to  decline entertaining any costume talk in July.

Since the move, we've clearly become targeted as a family that enjoys junk mail. You should see the crap we get BUT we did receive one catalog that sent me in a tail spin. A Halloween catalog of sorts. I've looked through it no less than 5x's and I just have to share some of my favorite kiddo costumes. They're too good not to...

I'm kinda loving the polar bear for Liv and the shark for Dos. Obv.

Wave your freak flag Friday!

Leaves on the ground and all...I'm quite pleased with the change of weather. ...and I may or may not be outfitting our home with one-too-many pumpkins. And skull garland. And glittery skulls with flashing eyes. And rubber mice. {Michael's be damned!} Rumor has it that my October antics border on overload.

But what good is a holiday or a season if you can't indulge? And by indulge I completely mean eating a bag of Halloween candy before October 5. Or baking pumpkin bread and grazing on it before dinner.

Or throwing on a sweater just in case the temps dip into the 50's when you know full well the high that day is going to be 65.

There's nothing wrong with it I say! And because I'm a firm believer of life being all about the little things...

...get inspired! Read a great book, flip through a magazine, drink hot cider {had my first cup last night}, bake something, make something but totally abandon your cool inner self for something geeky. I dare ya. No one's watching and if they were - I'd wave my freak flag and hang some more of that skull garland while eating my 13th Reese's peanut butter cup. It's that fun.

Cheers to the weekend!
